If a picture is worth 1000 words, what is a gallery-archive of pictures worth?
Exchanging Glances
For me there is no such thing as 'strangers'; just people that I haven't yet met. Even before a word is spoken, I am drawn by the mystery of who they are, what stories they have to tell and the piquancy that I will probably never see them again.
Altered Images
There is no cast iron law that a photograph has to be realistic. The first image is a painting which I made from a photo of the Taj Mahal. As a painting, nobody would question its abstract style, so there is no reason why the camera and the computer cannot also be used to abstract from reality.
Local Character
The essence and character of local communities can be found in local people.
Urban Life
"There are those 'of' cities who are not in them and others 'in' cities who are not of them." Professor Ray Pahl
West Country Scenes
"Know most of the rooms of thy native country before thou goest over the threshold thereof" Thomas Fuller 1608-1661.
British Vistas
"... the tides visiting and revisiting the friths, the main sea dashing against the bolder shore, the rivers pursuing their course to be lost in the mighty mass of waters. ... the winds sweeping over the lakes, or piping with a loud voice among the mountain peaks; and, lastly, ... the primaeval woods shedding and renewing their leaves with no human eye to notice, or human heart to regret or welcome the change." Wordsworth's Guide to the Lakes, 1906.
My Exmoor
"Some countryfolk are at home in a domesticated landscape; others must have their diet braced by ingredients closer to the untamed aspects of mankind. There lie the Moor's threefold claims on my inherited allegiance: the wilderness, the sea, the softness." J.H.B. Peel - Portrait of Exmoor
European Perspectives
Europe: a continent of immense variety and sophistication in its landscape, people, language, art, culture, religion and cuisine; integrated by its land and history.
Global Outlook
"The world is a book, and those who do not travel read only a page." Saint Augustine
Architecture and Townscape
"The mother art is architecture. Without an architecture of our own we have no soul of our own civilization." Frank Lloyd Wright
Street Pedallers
The world's most perfect machine combined wih the incredible potential and wonderful diversity of the human form.
